What has the priority, the head or heart?

Auteur: Peter Kreeft

Prayer is not only conversation, it is transformation. It is not only light, it is fire. And the closer you get to Him, the hotter the fire gets. Words begin to melt. The first word that melts in His presence is the word 'I.' That is His unique name. The closer you get to Him, the harder it is to begin a sentence with 'I.' It melts in the fire of 'thou.

Creation and Inertia: The Scientific Revolution and Discourse on Science-and-Religion

Auteur: William E. Carroll

The understanding of the Scientific Revolution as involving a rejection of Aristotelian science leads many to ignore profound truths about nature and human nature which are found in Aristotelian and Thomistic thought, and, in particular, to ignore or denigrate the value of such thought for the contemporary dialogue between science and religion. Some scholars (e.g., Wolfhart Pannenberg and Hans Blumenberg) have gone so far as to suggest that the principle of inertia, key to the new science of Isaac Newton, is incompatible with the traditional doctrine of creation. Newtonian science, according to such a view, anticipates an understanding of nature as self-sufficient, as not needing an explanation beyond itself. The claim is that just as bodies at rest or in motion need no cause for the continuation of either state, so it became easy to attribute a kind of autonomy or self-sufficiency to all of nature and its processes: only changes had to be explained, not persisting states. By looking again at the crucial developments in the science of the 17th Century, and by challenging misinterpretations of inertia and creation, we can see that to accept the developments of modern science does not require us to abandon traditional notions of creation, nor to reject as no longer valid Aristotelian and Thomistic notions of nature and cause and of the relationship among the natural sciences, philosophy, and theology.

The essential meaning of Christmas

Auteur: Benedict XVI

Pope Benedict XVI dedicated his Angelus reflections Sunday to John the Baptist. Speaking to pilgrims and visitors he said John is the voice that passes, Christ is the eternal Word from the beginning of time. Our aim today is to listen to that voice, to give space and welcome Jesus, the Word that saves us, to our hearts. In this time of Advent, let us prepare to see, with the eyes of faith, God's salvation in the humble stable in Bethlehem. In a consumerist society, where we seek joy in things, the Baptist teaches us to live in an essential way, so that Christmas is not only experienced as an outward celebration, but as the feast of the Son of God who came to bring peace, life and true joy to people.

What Teachers Make

Auteur: Taylor Mali

I am well aware that "What Teachers Make," a poem I wrote in 1999, has been elevated/reduced to the level of Inspirational Cyber Spam. It started happening shortly after I posted an unattributed draft of the poem on this very website. Since the poem appeared on my website, I figured my name was unnecessary. But I was wrong. I suspect the text of the poem got copied, pasted, and sent by well meaning teachers and fans. Soon enough, the poem became anonymous, and people began to edit, alter, and "sanitize" it. There are, to my knowledge, at least five different versions of the poem out there circulating. All of them are anonymous.

The poem has taken on a life of its own. Thomas Friedman, the New York Times columnist, quoted one of the anonymous versions in its entirety as part of his Yale graduation speech in 2003. This led to quotation by Harvey Mackay, the syndicated business columnist. National Public Radio did a story about the adventures of the poem in 2004. Am I disappointed not to have received credit for writing this poem that has inspired so many? Used to be. But the truth will always come out in the end. And if I had to choose between inspiring teachers anonymously or not inspiring them at all, I would choose anonymous inspiration every time.

Las dimensiones del conflicto

Auteur: Pablo Cardona

Auteur: Roland Joffe

"There Be Dragons" is about both kinds of civil war. Essentially we've all got to choose whether to hang on to our resentments or find a way of conquering them. Life can be seen as a series of injustices, of rejections and hurts, or as full of opportunities, of chances to conquer those dragons through the overwhelming desire to replace hatred with love and connection. Many people have it in them to make that heroic choice. They realize that they can make a choice to be free. They have the strength of character to understand that hate is a prison. No one who hates can be free.

Meeting with the representatives of british society, including the diplomatic corps, politicians, academics and business leaders: "Each generation, as it seeks to advance the common good, must ask anew: what are the requirements that governments may reasonably impose upon citizens, and how far do they extend? By appeal to what authority can moral dilemmas be resolved? These questions take us directly to the ethical foundations of civil discourse. If the moral principles underpinning the democratic process are themselves determined by nothing more solid than social consensus, then the fragility of the process becomes all too evident - herein lies the real challenge for democracy."

Russell Wilcox, a researcher from England, who divides his time between Oxford and London, and whose principal interests concern Natural Law, philosophical anthropology and inter-cultural diversity, delivered a paper entitled “Nature, Language, and the Human Science ” to students and professors of the University of Navarre. The lecture addressed the relation between the knowledge of human nature and the normative ordering of human communities from an Aristotelian/Thomistic perspective.

Wilcox dealt with the subject of Natural Law and human action from a largely Thomistic perspective, whilst at the same time drawing insights from such thinkers as American linguist, Noam Chomsky and German philosopher, Jurgen Habermas.

The audience was mainly composed of students and professors from the fields of Philosophy and Law. After the lecture, which was delivered in English, an engaging and constructive dialogue took place with the audience on subjects raised by the paper. This event, organized by the Cryf Research Group, received financial support from the John Templeton Foundation.

Publicidad 2.0: redes sociales

I gladiatori

Auteur: Andrea Giardina

Making Time Off Predictable -- And Required

Auteur: Harvard Business IdeaCast

The idea of "time off" is free time during the week that some companies begin to foster among the employees. The employees can dedicate this time off for activities that are fundamental in one's personal life: family, taking care of the sick, personal formation, etc. In the cases where time off was applied, it was observed that the efficiency and productivity of the employee has improved, and not diminished.

The idea of time off helps one see professional life as multi-dimensional and personally enriching, and not simply a one-way fast lane.

He described the surface as being like powdered charcoal and the landing craft left a crater about a foot deep.
