And, in describing the state of mind and of thought which leads to faith, it does not deny that faith is a supernatural work, and the fruit of divine grace. However, it is good to recall that we have a part to play in this process, one of cooperation.

There is a certain ambiguity to the word ‘freedom’. Some people say that to be free is to be independent—but we humans are clearly dependent on so many things. Some others think that freedom is the power to do whatever one likes—but this rather superficial definition will not resist serious scrutiny. We could rightly say that to be free is to have fulfilled all the potentialities of our nature—but this is a future freedom. In the present, freedom has to do with our personal choices, and the extent of our freedom depends on the quality of those choices.

Aus vielfachen Gründen, etwa historischer, kultureller, sozialer oder wirtschaftlicher Art, oder wegen der ihnen eigenen Überzeugungskraft sind sich die Menschen überall auf der Welt über diese Prinzipien einig geworden, so dass sie zum Fundament für eine globale Kultur geworden sind.

In seiner geplanten Vorlesung für die römisches Universität La Sapienza stellte Benedikt XVI. fest, dass dank des Fortschritts der Wissenschaften im Zeitalter der Moderne die Kenntnis und die Anerkennung der Rechte des Menschen und seiner Würde gewachsen sind. Dies sei eine Errungenschaft, die es zu hüten gelte. Gleichzeitig wies der Papst auf die Gefahr für dieses Erbe hin, wenn aus den Augen verloren werde, dass seine Wurzeln im christlichen Glauben zu finden seien: Wenn sich unsere Gesellschaft „nur selbst aus ihrem Argumentationszirkel und dem ihr jetzt Einleuchtenden konstruieren will und sich aus Furcht um ihre Säkularität von den Wurzeln abschneidet, von denen sie lebt, dann wird sie nicht vernünftiger und reiner, sondern zerfällt.“

No generation has been more studied than the cohort sometimes also known as Generation Y: the young men and women who were born after 1979. This Generation has experienced the ideologies of the second half of the past century put into legislation -and is not happy with them.

La Universidad actual se encuentra en el filo de la navaja. Su posición es más notoria y brillante que nunca, porque estamos cruzando el dintel de la sociedad del conocimiento. Mas, de otra parte, las propias instituciones académicas están sufriendo un proceso de vaciamiento interno, ya que en ellas decaen los ideales que las vienen alentando desde hace ocho siglos. De ahí que sea imprescindible y urgente repensar la Universidad.

En septiembre de 2005 un importante político español regalaba a los medios de comunicación un buen titular trastocando cierta conocida expresión evangélica. «La verdad os hará libres» ahora se convertía en «la libertad os hará verdaderos». El orden de los factores altera el producto, y las dos frases se enfrentan como la noche al día. Lo que podría ser una ocurrencia quizás feliz, quizás de mal gusto, en realidad resume con magistral brevedad la idea de fondo que caracteriza en buena medida al actual régimen democrático.

Nuestra mentalidad post-moderna prefiere abogar por un dolce far niente, por la poltronería de sillón, por la aventura virtual en la pantalla televisiva de plasma. No nos gusta la palabra héroe: suena, en nuestros democráticos oídos, a película non stop action protagonizada por Rambo.

As the director of the Human Genome Project, I have led a consortium of scientists to read out the 3.1 billion letters of the human genome, our own DNA instruction book.
