And, in describing the state of mind and of thought which leads to faith, it does not deny that faith is a supernatural work, and the fruit of divine grace. However, it is good to recall that we have a part to play in this process, one of cooperation.

But what doesn’t change are the elements that go to make up good decisions and right policies: sincerity, integrity, solidarity, universality, and of course – in recognition of the historic verity that man proposes and God disposes – prayer.

Mas, de otra parte, las propias instituciones académicas están sufriendo un proceso de vaciamiento interno, ya que en ellas decaen los ideales que las vienen alentando desde hace ocho siglos. De ahí que sea imprescindible y urgente repensar la Universidad.

En septiembre de 2005 un importante político español regalaba a los medios de comunicación un buen titular trastocando cierta conocida expresión evangélica. «La verdad os hará libres» ahora se convertía en «la libertad os hará verdaderos». El orden de los factores altera el producto, y las dos frases se enfrentan como la noche al día. Lo que podría ser una ocurrencia quizás feliz, quizás de mal gusto, en realidad resume con magistral brevedad la idea de fondo que caracteriza en buena medida al actual régimen democrático.
