This discourse discusses how it is that, humanly speaking, a man comes to believe the revealed word of God, and why one man believes and another does not. And, in describing the state of mind and of thought which leads to faith, it does not deny that faith is a supernatural work, and the fruit of divine grace. However, it is good to recall that we have a part to play in this process, one of cooperation.

The understanding of the Scientific Revolution as involving a rejection of Aristotelian science leads many to ignore profound truths about nature and human nature which are found in Aristotelian and Thomistic thought, and, in particular, to ignore or denigrate the value of such thought for the contemporary dialogue between science and religion. Some scholars (e.g., Wolfhart Pannenberg and Hans Blumenberg) have gone so far as to suggest that the principle of inertia, key to the new science of Isaac Newton, is incompatible with the traditional doctrine of creation. Newtonian science, according to such a view, anticipates an understanding of nature as self-sufficient, as not needing an explanation beyond itself. The claim is that just as bodies at rest or in motion need no cause for the continuation of either state, so it became easy to attribute a kind of autonomy or self-sufficiency to all of nature and its processes: only changes had to be explained, not persisting states. By looking again at the crucial developments in the science of the 17th Century, and by challenging misinterpretations of inertia and creation, we can see that to accept the developments of modern science does not require us to abandon traditional notions of creation, nor to reject as no longer valid Aristotelian and Thomistic notions of nature and cause and of the relationship among the natural sciences, philosophy, and theology.

Hay campañas que nos gustan porque son emotivas, alegres o simplemente divertidas. Y hay campañas que nos hacen pensar; que se quedan en nuestra memoria porque apelan a nuestra conciencia, a nuestra solidaridad.

Rostros como los de los futbolistas Andrés Iniesta o Xabi Alonso, los presentadores Andreu Buenafuente, Manel Fuentes o Eduardo Punset, el cocinero Ferrán Adrià o los cantantes Pau Donés y Alejandro Sanz, se han puesto manos a la obra en esta campaña, cuyo broche de oro es el spot del cineasta Luis García Berlanga. Éste sería su última interpretación delante de la cámara, antes de fallecer el 13 de noviembre del año pasado.

En este breve reportaje (5 minutos) se puede ver toda la maravillosa gestación de esta campaña -el "así se hizo"- que nos hace partícipes del esfuerzo que supone la producción de un anuncio y la imaginación que se necesita para que una gran idea pueda llegar a todo el mundo.

El profesor del IESE Pablo Cardona, analiza en esta entrevista las dimensiones del conflicto. Según cuenta el profesor, el conflicto se divide en la dimensión "racional", que tiene que ver con la falta de alineamiento en las ideas, y la dimensión "emocional", que abarca ya no las ideas sino la confianza entre las partes. En la mayoría de ocasiones, estas dimensiones van unidas y en su opinión esto complica el proceso de resolución de un conflicto. El profesor de Dirección de Personas en las Organizaciones considera que el conflicto ayuda a "avanzar, a replantearse, a buscar soluciones más creativas", sobre todo cuando se trata de un conflicto más racional. Cuando la dimensión afectada es la emocional, una buena solución del conflicto puede ayudar a aprender a perdonar, a conocer las limitaciones mutuas e incluso a "entendernos mejor y querernos más". El profesor de Dirección de Personas en las Organizaciones considera que el conflicto ayuda a "avanzar, a replantearse, a buscar soluciones más creativas", sobre todo cuando se trata de un conflicto más racional. There is a certain ambiguity to the word ‘freedom’. Some people say that to be free is to be independent—but we humans are clearly dependent on so many things. Some others think that freedom is the power to do whatever one likes—but this rather superficial definition will not resist serious scrutiny. We could rightly say that to be free is to have fulfilled all the potentialities of our nature—but this is a future freedom. In the present, freedom has to do with our personal choices, and the extent of our freedom depends on the quality of those choices.

La conoscenza funzionale, pur essendo coerente con l’aspirazione umana al sapere, non solo non coincide con essa ma è anche più ristretta rispetto ad essa. Se si vuole farla corrispondere a quello che siamo, occorre integrarla e tra­scenderla – senza beninteso negarla – in vista di una dimensione che non parla il linguaggio dell’“utile” ma quello dell’“essenziale”. Penso che a questo corrisponda la ragione sapienziale il cui riconoscimento non è banale ma richiede attenzione; il suo misconoscimento –peral­tro– non passa inosservato, e di questo siamo tutti testimoni.

Alejandro Llano, catedrático de la Universidad de Navarra, ha reunido sus recuerdos desde la adolescencia hasta hace aproximadamente diez años en una obra titulada Olor a yerba seca. El autor dice de su obra que no es una autobiografía intelectual: “Mi dedicación a la Filosofía no constituye el centro de la narrativa, aunque lógicamente es objeto de reflexión. Tiene quizá más relevancia el dramatismo de mi participación en las vicisitudes de la vida española, con especial referencia a la rebelión estudiantil de los años sesenta, en la que participé activamente”.

Sin embargo, los datos lingüísticos e históricos de que se dispone, permiten suponer que los poemas fueron escritos en los asentamientos griegos de la costa oeste de Asia Menor, hacia el siglo IX a.C.

La Universidad actual se encuentra en el filo de la navaja. Su posición es más notoria y brillante que nunca, porque estamos cruzando el dintel de la sociedad del conocimiento. Mas, de otra parte, las propias instituciones académicas están sufriendo un proceso de vaciamiento interno, ya que en ellas decaen los ideales que las vienen alentando desde hace ocho siglos. De ahí que sea imprescindible y urgente repensar la Universidad.

No sé muy bien por qué motivos, pero la gente coincide al decir que lo que busca en la vida es una cosa que llama felicidad. Pero, ¿debemos aspirar a lo que no tenemos, a lo que tal vez no sea siquiera alcanzable? Nuestra mentalidad post-moderna prefiere abogar por un dolce far niente, por la poltronería de sillón, por la aventura virtual en la pantalla televisiva de plasma. No nos gusta la palabra héroe: suena, en nuestros democráticos oídos, a película non stop action protagonizada por Rambo.
