Personal and Interpersonal Fullfilment

Author: Cormac Burke

We have a radical need of others, not only to love or to be loved by them, but to learn from them. We are put to a particular test by values —accepting or rejecting them— when we meet them present in others, by whom they are both incarnated and personalized. "Incarnated" values: with the advantage of the concrete form this takes, and with the limitations that any particular human presentation of a value inevitably offers.

The End of Solitude

Author: William Deresiewicz

The contemporary self wants to be recognized, connected: it wants to be visible. This is how we become real to ourselves by being seen by others. The goal now, it seems, is simply to become known, to turn oneself into a sort of miniature celebrity. How many friends do I have on Facebook? How many people are reading my blog? However, what is disappearing from our lives is solitude.

Why Can’t We Be Virtual Friends?

Author: Craig Condella

As with all technological innovations, Facebook presents us with something like a double-edged sword. While it permits us to maintain friendships that otherwise would unfortunately wither away, its propensity to create and maintain such abundant friendships threatens to choke those friends that matter the most.

Too much information, too little thought

Author: Carolyn Moynihan

Silence and stillness are not enough for us. They might be for a little while, as an immediate escape from the din and demands of daily life. But they are means to an end rather than ends in themselves. In his Letter for World Communications Day Pope Benedict XVI shows how silence is meant to serve relationships – with God and others.

Cuando el progreso se transforma en caos

Author: Romano Guardini

A World Split Apart

Author: Alexander Solzhenitsyn

More than thirty years ago, when the world was still divided in two, Alexander Solzhenitsyn delivered a commencement address at Harvard University in which he noted some of the weaknesses and defects of the West. Despite the years which have passed, they continue to be relevant today and invite one to reflect about the degree to which the situation has changed and the challenges which still remain.

The Homelessness of Man

Author: G.K. Chesterton

What is wrong with the world? What is wrong is that we do not ask what is right. Social science is by no means always content with the normal human soul; it has all sorts of fancy souls for sale. Man as a social idealist will say "I am tired of being a Puritan; I want to be a Pagan," or "Beyond this dark probation of Individualism I see the shining paradise of Collectivism." Now in bodily ills there is none of this difference about the ultimate ideal. No one says "I am tired of this headache; I want some toothache"…

Las dimensiones del conflicto

Author: Pablo Cardona

Can Christianity inspire a global culture? (Finland)

Author: Tavasttähti, Helsinki, Finland

Our aim in this video is to investigate whether Christianity could inspire a common, global, yet diversified culture. In order to knit our presentation together around this large question, we approach the theme from the viewpoint of human rights, how they have been expressed and understood today as in the past, and how they are lived. We observe briefly that the resulting conceptions and practices have deep implications in all the spheres of culture.

El sentido de la libertad

Author: Ricardo Yepes Stork
